In an effort to address this issue, the Bahamas Diabetes Association has developed a youth awareness program. This program is designed to help both those affected and their families learn more about diabetes in young people and assists them with managing their lives better. The Bahamas Diabetes Youth program was established in 1986. The ages of kids in the program range from three to twenty-five years old. The foundation of the program is based on regular monthly meetings that are held on the third or forth Sunday in the month.
Diabetes is becoming more prevalent in young people today. Children with diabetes, their families, health care providers, and school personnel alike face unique challenges when dealing with youth diabetes.
Additionally There is an annual camp every summer for the youth with both local and international volunteers. The camping experience is designed to bring kids together in a fun-filled relaxing environment. The sessions are purposely intended to foster self-sufficiency in the kids and to demonstrate that people need not be limited by diabetes. The experience also provides a strong support system to the youth facing these challenges.
