Bahamas Diabetic Association Tip Of The Day

Food has always been considered one of the key elements in the maintenance of one’s health. Without a doubt food and diet play an important role in human health. So why then do we often neglect to pay attention to the fundamental aspect of our health and well being-our diet.

Many years ago, the great Hippocrates; who has rightly earned the title of “father of Western medicine, coined the phrase, "Let thy food be thy medicine, and thy medicine be thy food". He recognized the important role food in overall health.

If this adage is true then it serves to reason that persons living with diabetes must take an even more aggressive stand to preserve their health. Every day, research provides us with more information about better food choices.

Here are some valuable tips on better food choices:
  • Choose more plant based foods and green leafy vegetables found in foods such as spinach, dark green lettuce, brocolli and kale. These foods are good sources of B vitamins
  • Eat more citrus fruits as some studies show that people with diabetes appear to have lower levels of vitamin C
  • Choose oats instead of sugary boxed cereals as it is a good source of soluable fibre
  • Eat more whole grain breads; this is a good way to prevent spikes in insulin so often seen from consuming flour
  • Soy has so many advantages as it offers many cancer fighting chemicals such as isoflavones
  • Most importantly, drink a good brand of distilled water. Drink at least 6 glasses a day
